ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND "BLACK BOXES“ OF DIGITAL TOTALITARISM

Abstract

Current processes of digitization across all areas of life have not been sufficiently examined. In this context, it seems that in the age of late capitalism, which heavily relies on the use of new technologies and artificial intelligence, the manner in which intelligent systems are utilized and who controls them has become highly questionable. Knowledge, in this regard, appears to play a crucial role, concerning both the manipulation of these systems and the delegation of decision-making power to them. However, the use of knowledge as power paves the way towards digital totalitarianism, which will be discussed in this article. Additionally, the text explores the potential humanization of these processes, taking into account the qualities of transparency and human participation in explaining the activities of artificial intelligence. All these processes are viewed from the perspective of the relationship towards so-called other consciousnesses, illustrated through the thought experiment of the “Chinese Room” and the metaphor of “black boxes.”
