Bozickovic<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indexicals and Linguistic Meaning: The Interpersonal Trouble<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The cognitive significance of those thoughts that we intrapersonally express by means of indexical expressions cannot be equated with the linguistic meaning of these expressions since it is both possible to express thoughts with distinct cognitive significance by means of the same indexical and to express thoughts with the same cognitive significance by means of different indexicals. The second possibility is famously illustrated by Frege in The Thought: \u201cIf someone wants to say today what he expressed yesterday using the word \u2018today\u2019, he will replace this word with \u2018yesterday\u2019.\u201d But if the same thought can be re-expressed by means of expressions with distinct meanings, how can we account for their cognitive significance and the related problem of belief retention of indexical beliefs? If someone wants to say today what he expressed yesterday using the word \u2018today\u2019, he will replace this word with \u2018yesterday\u2019. While I have dealt with this in a paper submitted to the present issue of the FR collection, it continued to torment me how we can tackle the interpersonal case in which I say to you &#8216;I am hungry&#8217; and you reiterate with &#8216;You are hungry&#8217;. For, arguably, you and I cannot think of myself via the same cognitive significance, especially if Frege is right in claiming that everyone is presented to himself in a special way in which he is presented to no-one else. On the face of it, we have to settle with a lopsided theory that treats the intrapersonal and interpersonal cases distinctly which neither count in its favour nor sets my mind at ease.
